Sunday strolls through Luxembourg: quiet corners and multicultural whispers
It's just past 11am on a quiet Sunday in Luxembourg City, and I'm sitting at a small café near Place d'Armes, watching the world slowly wake up around me. The morning has been pleasantly cool - about 14°C with partial sunshine that occasionally disappears behind clouds. Perfect walking weather, which I've taken full advantage of since breakfast.
I started my day early (as usual) with a simple breakfast at my hotel. The coffee was decent, though not exceptional - serviceable enough to start the day. By 8:30, I was out exploring the streets, which were delightfully empty. Sunday mornings seem to be sacred quiet time here, with most locals either still asleep or at church.
Luxembourg is fascinating in its compactness. After just one full day, I feel like I've seen a significant portion of the center, yet there are still so many layers to uncover. This morning, I decided to wander without a specific destination, allowing myself to get slightly lost in the narrow streets of the old town.
The whispers of multiple languages
One of the most striking things about Luxembourg is hearing the seamless transition between languages. Just at this café, I've heard French, German, Luxembourgish, and English in the span of 30 minutes. The server addressed me first in French, then switched to English when he heard my accent. When a local couple sat down, they spoke to him in Luxembourgish, and he responded without missing a beat.
I find myself envious of this multilingual fluency. My attempts at French yesterday were met with polite smiles, but most people quickly switched to English to make things easier. It's humbling to be surrounded by people who navigate multiple languages with such ease.
The Pétrusse Valley's morning tranquility
The highlight of my morning was definitely finding a quiet path down into the Pétrusse Valley. After crossing the impressive Adolphe Bridge yesterday, I was curious to explore the green space below. I found a small trail that wound down from the upper city, and suddenly I was surrounded by trees and birdsong, the city sounds fading above me.
The valley was practically deserted at 9:30 this morning. I counted only three joggers and an elderly man walking his small dog during my hour-long exploration. The contrast between the bustling upper city and this peaceful green corridor is remarkable.
Some of the trees in the valley are truly magnificent - especially a row of what I believe are plane trees with massive trunks that must be at least a century old. I took several photos, trying to capture their impressive scale against the backdrop of the old fortifications above.
Contemplating next steps
As I sit here now, I'm thinking about what to do with the remainder of my day. The National Museum of History and Art opens at noon, which gives me just enough time to finish my coffee before heading there. I'm particularly interested in their archaeology section, which supposedly has artifacts dating back to the Neolithic period.
For dinner, I'm determined to try Judd mat Gaardebounen - the traditional smoked pork collar with broad beans that seems to be Luxembourg's national dish. The hotel receptionist recommended a restaurant called "Bei der Auer" that supposedly serves an authentic version, though she warned me it might be busy on a Sunday evening.
I've also been contemplating my next destination. Berlin has been on my mind, but I'm not feeling any urgent restlessness yet. Luxembourg is small enough that another day or two should be sufficient to explore it thoroughly, but there's something charming about the city that makes me want to linger a bit longer. Perhaps it's the blend of historical architecture and modern efficiency, or maybe it's just the peaceful Sunday atmosphere.
For now, I'll focus on today and see where the afternoon takes me. With 481 days still ahead in my journey, there's no need to rush. Each place deserves its proper time, however long that might be.
Time to finish this coffee and continue exploring.
